HERO STORIES
Lampin Supports the Surgical Equipment Industry:
When
Visualization Technology, Inc. needed help in designing their revolutionary
line of fluoroscopy-based surgical tools they contacted Lampin Corporation,
a company with nearly twenty years of experience as a supplier to
the medical equipment industry. VTI was able to tap into Lampin's
knowledge of precision machining, medically accepted material and
practices, traceability, and documentation to help design and manufacture
surgical instruments that are guided by 3-dimensional data. Surgeons
can now operate more precisely and efficiently in critical areas thanks
to a marriage between high-tech imaging software and reliable tools.

Lampin Supports the Medical
Disposables Industry:
One Sunday evening a potentially disastrous fire at Smith & Nephew's
Andover, Massachusetts facility was averted when the sprinkler system
worked. Unfortunately the two machines that were producing their highly
popular line of arthroscopy disposable bone burrs were knocked out
of commission and possibly destroyed. At 8:05am on Monday morning
Lampin's weekly production meeting was interrupted by a panic call
for help. Two years earlier Lampin Corporation had supported the development
efforts with the understanding that S&N would eventually purchase
machinery and equipment to bring production into their own facility.
Four hours after the telephone call, material was transferred from
Andover to Uxbridge. Production schedules were changed and by Tuesday
morning parts were being manufactured. Eventually two CNC Citizen
swiss machines were run around the clock and over a holiday weekend
to keep up with S&N's needs. Lampin became a critical resource
as needs changed and communication between S&N's manufacturing
and materials specialists had to be constantly updated. Material traceability,
inspection, and lot integrity were coordinated as parts flowed daily
from Lampin to a certified heat treat facility and finally to Smith
& Nephew.

Lampin Supports the Direct
Imaging Industry :
Presstek Corporation, the world leader of direct imaging equipment
had a problem. Their pioneering technology was rapidly being accepted
and their biggest customer was forecasting a massive leap in sales.
Direct imaging is a high-tech, pre-press process used in the printing
industry to reduce the time between concept and finished product.
It eliminates the use of dangerous chemicals and waste in the production
of color plates.
Lampin
Corporation has always supplied the lens holder components, which
are critical to the alignment and focus of the laser that is the
heart of Presstek's equipment. These components require precision
tolerances to .0002 inch, low reflectivity, fine threads for adjustment
and incorporate various metals and plastics. When they received
word of the ramp-up Presstek's material specialists called Lampin
management to their war room. It immediately became obvious that
despite Lampin's excellent performance, they could not support the
increased level of activity without major changes. Although solid
support systems were in place, there was insufficient capacity.
Within hours of leaving
the meeting arrangements were made for new capital equipment, sources
of material were secured, and shifts were changed to accommodate
round-the-clock production. Delivery commitments were made without
sacrificing the superior quality that Presstek had come to expect.
The forecast was actually exceeded and Presstek today is the world-leader
of DI equipment to the printing industry.

Lampin Supports the Optical
Equipment Industry :
Lampin Corporation has a long term relationship with Gerber Coburn
of South Windsor, CT and Muskogee, OK so it was a natural collaboration
when Gerber began designing its new gemini lens processing system.
The heart of the mechanical system is a hexapod design that eliminates
hard laps and produces a more exact lens prescription.
Lampin
has been supplying mechanical sub-assemblies to Gerber Coburn since
1995 and entered into a KANBAN supply agreement in 1999. The original
hexapod leg design for gemini incorporated seven parts, required
precise fits, and considerable assembly time. During a conversation
in the middle of Gerber's model shop between Lampin's account manager,
Gerber's engineer, a procurement specialist, and research machinist
a new concept was sketched that addressed all the concerns of the
original design including strength and weight but could be accomplished
with just three components. Within days the prototypes were supplied.
Today the improved design is not only more reliable and aesthetically
more pleasing, but offers documented cost savings in excess of 50%.

Lampin Supports the Valve
Industry:
During the past 20 years
as Titanium Ball Valve Co. has moved four times and experienced
three different owners, one thing has stayed the same. Today, TBV
Inc. Subsidiary of Precision Castparts Corporation continues to
rely on Lampin Corporation for critical components. TBV supplies
specialty valves where absolutely no external leakage is tolerable
so they choose suppliers who don't tolerate missed deliveries or
poor quality.
One
recent Tuesday afternoon TBV realized it would be unable to meet
a customer's demand because of a missing component. The parts had
to machined from mill certified material and there could be absolutely
no deviation from the exacting specifications. TBV called Lampin
because of its 100% on-time delivery performance and high quality
track record.
Within minutes of receiving
the call, Lampin was able to procure the material and make arrangements
for early morning delivery. Because Lampin's production control
system is customer-driven, a machine was quickly located and made
ready for manufacture. Parts were produced on Wednesday morning
and delivered to TBV in the afternoon.
Normal lead times in
this industry run about four weeks but the reason Lampin can be
so responsive is due to two critical factors. They have a unique
networked, real time, production control system that is customer
driven and they have employees who understand the dedication and
commitment necessary to support today's rapidly changing requirements.
TBV could keep its promise thanks to the immediate response of a
company dedicated to customer service.
