UXBRIDGE, Mass., Oct. 7, 2015 /PRNewswire/ — Lampin, an advanced precision component manufacturer in MA, celebrated Manufacturing Day last Thursday by speaking to educators and fellow manufacturers at the Worcester Regional Chamber of Commerce’s panel discussion, “Made in Central Mass: Manufacturing Matters.” The invitation-only panel was assembled with the intention of addressing the growing skills gap that threatens to hamper Massachusetts’ manufacturing industry.

“Manufacturing is a very robust and advanced industry in Massachusetts,” said Lampin president, Bill DiBenedetto. “It is incredibly important for us to collaborate with education officials and get more students interested in pursuing careers in manufacturing where they have the opportunity to learn advanced engineering skills while earning a livable salary.”

DiBenedetto actively searches schools throughout Central Massachusetts for students demonstrating enthusiasm and interest in making things. Lampin provides part-time employment opportunities to high school students in their Senior year and beyond. The average salary for manufacturing employees is approximately $77,000 per year, and Lampin provides comprehensive, on-the-job training for applicants with no prior experience or degree. Two of Lampin’s student-employees were present at the panel to share their experiences and excitement about working at Lampin, and elaborated on how it has helped them formulate their college curriculum—as well as their career path.

The panel discussed several initiatives that have been implemented at WPI and Quinsigamond Community College that will help students earn college credits for courses in engineering and CNC software operation. They also discussed the skills that students should be developing in preparation for careers in manufacturing: critical thinking, innovation, communication, and mathematics.
